DETROIT – If you happen to suffer from Baseball insomnia, then this morning was a great morning to get a really good dose of it. The Detroit Tigers hosted the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit and Warwick Saupold for the second time in a week earned the MVP of the game honours.
Saupold entered the game in a high leverage and pressured situation as the 30,000 + Tigers faithful had just watched their Ace and starter, Justin Verlander leave the game with a groin injury.
Verlander, who is usually good for 7-8 Innings and most almost pencil in a win when he’s on the mound, would leave the Tigers fans stunned. Saying that, Verlander wasn’t anywhere near his best, struggling with control giving up 2 Earned Runs and leaving the game with Detroit 2-0 down.
Enter Warwick Saupold as the game moved to inning number 3.
Saupold who’s still fighting to earn a regular gig with the Tigers, impressed in his last opportunity and once again was presented with the opportunity to shine. And shine he did.
There has been chatter in Tiger land that Saupold may move into the rotation to replace Matt Boyd who was optioned back to Toledo on Saturday, but he now seems to be a vital piece in long relief for the Tigers pen.
Saupold pitched the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th inning for the Tigers allowing just 2 hits, giving up 0 Runs and striking out 4, lowering his ERA to 1.84.
At the completion of the 6th inning, Saupold had the Tigers leading 4-2 and judging by social media, Saupold is beginning to win his way into the hearts of the Tigers faithful.
Since returning to the bigs, Saupold has done the following:
May 23rd @ Houston: 0 Earned Runs | 2 Hits | 1 Strike Out
May 25th @ Houston: 0 Earned Runs | 0 Hits
May 28th @ Chi White Sox: 0 Earned Runs | 2 Hits | 4 Strike Outs
May 31st @ Kansas City: 3IP | 0 Earned Runs | 1 Hit | 0 Strike Outs
June 5th v Chi White Sox: 4IP | 0 Earned Runs | 2 Hits | 4 Strike Outs
